Nan’s old recipe becomes a national success

A fudge company from Pwllheli proves you should never underestimate a good old family recipe.

In 2009, after Matthew Robertson had finished university and was looking for a job, he decided he would try to recreate the fudge his Nan used to make when he was a child.

After several attempts and a helping hand from mum, Linda, the perfect balance of sweetness, flavour and texture was achieved.

“Everyone was telling us how nice the fudge was and that we should package it and sell it,” said brother, Ben.

And that’s how it all began.  What started in their home kitchen from an old family recipe book is now a business selling all over the UK, Matt & Ben’s Proper Fudge.

Today, Matt’s parents, Ben and his partner are all part of the family business.

“We have four flavours, vanilla, espresso, salted caramel and chilli chocolate,” said Ben.  “We sell our produce at local shops, small outlets and at markets and shows all over the UK.  It is all handmade and hand packaged.   In the new year we hope to have an online shop.”

The resealable pots come in different sizes from 50g to 200g.  They also make sauces available in three flavours: salted caramel, toffee and chocolate.

Matt and Ben’s Proper Fudge was included in this year’s Ultimate Welsh Hamper, put together by Bodnant Welsh Food to compete against existing luxury Christmas hampers.
